“The believers, men and women, are protectors one of another: they enjoin what is just and forbid what is evil; they observe regular prayers, pay Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. On them will Allah pour His mercy.”

Qur’an 9:71
How much should I give?

In Shia practice, obligatory Zakat applies to nine specific things — four crops, three kinds of livestock, and gold and silver held as coined money. For most people living in Britain none of those apply, and the annual obligation that does reach them is Khums.

Giving in the spirit of Zakat is still open to everyone, at whatever proportion you choose. Two and a half per cent is simply the figure most people have in mind. You may give more, and nobody may tell you that you owe it.

Do you farm wheat, barley, dates or raisins?
